Ephesians 4:31-32, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Insight & Encouragement

I think we can all admit to having feelings of bitterness, rage, anger, and slander towards someone at some point in our life. It is going to happen, although we are Christians, we are human and not perfect. We mess up, we get our feelings hurt and therefore want to retaliate or feel negative feelings toward that person, we get jealous and don’t always wish the best for someone; these are just a few examples over the years that I have felt, and I am sure I am not alone. However, we cannot harbor on these feelings. Take a look at what the beginning of these verses says, “get rid”. As soon as these feelings enter into our minds, we must rid of them. The moment something happens or someone wrongs you, stop and say a prayer, and continue to pray until you no longer feel bad towards someone. In v. 32, we see the example of Christian living. Kindness, compassionate, forgiving, just as Christ was. As Jesus was dying on the Cross, as he was being beaten, He asked God to forgive them. Christians are imitators of Christ in every area in life, we cannot just pick and choose how we live our Christian lives.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for any bitter thoughts that have entered into my mind. I do not want to feel bitter towards anyone, even those who have hurt me. In every area of my life, I want to live for you and show others you through my life. I pray that you lead me toward forgiveness when someone has wronged me, and show kindness and compassion for all people. In your name I pray, Amen.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Insight & Encouragement

When we live according to the Lord’s purpose, He works ALL things out. So many times in life it is hard to imagine how a situation is going to “work out for the good”. We have all been there, and will probably be there again sometime in our life. He has a plan for you, a purpose for every season of your life, and He wants you to allow for Him to show you. Don’t give up when things get tough. Don’t think, “well God must not love me if he is allowing for me to go through this”. These thoughts are false, and the devil is working in your life through thoughts such as these. Have you ever had to watch a brother or sister in Christ go through many trials in their life, and they still remain joyful? Or maybe you are this person, regardless it is because they know that God is right by their side and won’t allow them to go through more than they can handle. Paul points this out here in v.28. I am going to leave you with the lyrics of a popular praise and worship song by Jesus Culture, “Your Love Never Fails”;
Nothing can separate
Even if I ran away
Your love never fails

I know I still make mistakes
But You have new mercies for me everyday
Your love never fails

You stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
And may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning

And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that You love me
Your love never fails

The wind is strong and the water’s deep
I’m not alone in these open seas
‘Cause Your love never fails

The chasm is far too wide
I never thought I’d reach the other side
‘Cause Your love never fails

‘Cause you stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
There may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning

And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that You love me
Oh no, love never fails

‘Cause You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good

‘Cause you stay
‘Cause you stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
It may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning

And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that You love me

Love never fails

You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make, you make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
‘Cause You make all things work together for my good

‘Cause you stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
It may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning

And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that You love me

Never fails

Sorry it is a little long, but each word of this song is a blessing, and if you have a chance YouTube the song and just allow the Lord to speak to you. You will always be faced with pain, but remember just as the verse says, all things work together for good.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me so much that you work everything out for what is good for my life. I pray that you rid of the devil when he tries to sneak in and allow me to think I have messed up too bad, or that life is just too hard. For all those who are suffering, I ask that you touch them and remind them that your love NEVER fails. In your name I pray, Amen.

Luke 10:27, “He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Insight & Encouragement

Love. It’s a word that gets expressed every day; to your spouse, to your children, your family, to your friends, but how often to you show love to the Lord throughout your day? We proclaim we love the Lord and serve Him daily in every aspect of our lives, but when we stop and really think about the day we have had is God at the center? I will admit, sometimes this isn’t the case with my day. I find myself in the latest gossip at work, I find myself getting frustrated with people, that I haven’t even slowed down enough to say thank you Lord for this wonderful day you have blessed me with. Then at the end of the day, I look back and am saddened by this.

Then comes love your neighbor as yourself. I love that after this verse comes the parable of the “Good Samaritan”. It is one of my favorite parables, because it shows exactly how a Christian should live their life. This verse doesn’t say love your spouse, love your children, love your best friends, no it says love your neighbor. The person across the aisle in the church whom you have never met, the person walking down the street who is different than you are, the coworker who is having difficulties and everyone else runs from, we are to love them!

These are the Lords two greatest “laws” Love the Lord and love others. I often think of the acronym J.O.Y. (Jesus, Others, Yourself). From the moment our eyes open in the morning until your head hits the pillow at night, show the Lord your love for Him. Don’t feed into the latest “gossip”, don’t allow yourself to become hurt or upset over the little things, and with every part of your body, heart, and soul love and praise the Lord. Praise the Lord through how you love others, even though they are not like you. Loving someone doesn’t mean you have to agree with them, but you can still love them and show them that love.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for your parables and how your Word has such a meaning for each of our lives. Thank you for not only telling us, but showing us how to love. You loved all people and you were perfect. I pray that in my day to day life I am able to love others and reflect you to them. In your name I pray, Amen.

Proverbs 27:1, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”

Insight & Encouragement

There will never be another today. Instead of worrying about tomorrow or the future, instead of talking about what you will do in the future or how great it will be then, remind yourself that today is great. Today God has in His hands, and is blessing you in so many ways. James 4:14-15 reminds us of this as well when it says, “You don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? It is a mist that appears for a little while. Then it disappears. Instead, you should say, “If it pleases the Lord, we will live and do this or that.”” If it pleases the Lord. These are the words that we should say when we talk about our future. If the Lord wills, then it will be your future. We shouldn’t jump the gun on our future, but rather worry about today. Today is about loving those around you, forgiving those who have hurt you, comforting those who need you, and caring for what you have that is in front of you today. Tomorrow is never promised.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for today. Thank you for knowing exactly what we need today, and in our future. As I go through each day, help me to acknowledge how blessed I am, and not to boast or worry about the future. Thank you for holding my future in your hands. In your name I pray, Amen.

Acts 14:22, “strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.”

Insight & Encouragement

As Paul and Barnabas went to share the word of God, they “won a large number of disciples”, as it states in v. 21. In other words, many people were saved through Paul and Barnabas’s teachings. They then returned and didn’t just leave the new Christians to fend for themselves, instead they strengthened them. Paul and Barnabas were encouraging as they reminded them that although they will endure hardships, their reward will be in heaven as they enter into the kingdom of God. Christians today, even the mature Christian who has grown up serving the Lord, goes through hardships. As a new Christian, there are hardships that many times they are not prepared for. After accepting Christ as Lord over their lives, their lives begin to change, and this can be difficult. If you know someone who has just become a Christian, stand by them. Be an encouragement to them just as Paul and Barnabas were to the new Christians. They need the love and support of Christians around them.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for disciples like Paul and Barnabas who have helped and encouraged the new Christians to not give up. As those in my life find Christ, I pray that I can be an encouragement to them that though they may endure hardships, their reward will be far greater when they are one day with you. In your name I pray, Amen.

Matthew 7:28-29, “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.”

Insight & Encouragement

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to have had the chance to hear Jesus sharing the word? As I read through the gospels, and they share the teachings of Jesus, I cannot help but imagine how wonderful it would have been to sit at the feet of Jesus and just listen. Jesus taught with love and patience, and people noticed and were drawn to Him. When you think of your favorite teachers in school, Sunday School, or pastors within the church, you think of the ones who taught you with love, compassion, those who truly cared about you on a personal level, and showed kindness to all people. As we share Jesus with people, we need to example Christ.  Don’t be like the leaders prior to Jesus who only spoke with authority, rather be like Jesus and teach with a heart that reflects love for Christ and those whom you are teaching.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for your teaching both through your words of love and encouragement, and through your actions. Thank you for your word which has taught so many great disciples over the many years. People were drawn to you because you taught in a way that did not make anyone feel as though you had authority over them, which made people want to listen to you. Thank you for this. I pray that leaders and teachers will learn from the way you taught, and utilize it in their ministry to further your kingdom. In your name I pray, Amen.

John 3:17, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

Insight & Encouragement

Hearing a family member, friend, or an acquaintance say that God could never love them because they have just done too many terrible things in life, is heartbreaking. Jesus was not sent to earth to make anyone feel like a failure, to hurt anyone, or to condemn anyone. Jesus came to save us and show us love. We see many times throughout the New Testament, that while Jesus was on earth He loved those that no one else would even get close too. He loved those who others hated, and taught people how to do the same. The next time you hear someone say that Jesus will not save them because they are just too bad, remind them that Jesus loves everyone, and that their sins can be wiped clean.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I am not worthy of your forgiveness and love, but thank you for loving me so much that you have forgiven my sins. Thank you for teaching us that your love is unconditional. For those who believe they are far to bad to be saved, I want to pray for them today. That they will realize that you love even the worst of sinners, and will forgive them if they ask. In your name I pray, Amen.

1 John 4:4, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

Insight & Encouragement

As a Christian the world can be a difficult place. In the world there are lies, false teachings, and so much evil. It can be difficult to know who to trust, and if you are not careful you can easily be fooled. However, here in 1 John, we see that this even happened back then. There were false spirits and evil during those times, just as there are today. There is good news for believers here in this verse. We are from God, and He is greater than those of the world. As we still must be on guard out in the world, we can rest assured knowing that our Lord has overcome those of the world. Christians have the Holy Spirit living with them, who is far more powerful. God will lead and direct you to righteousness, while man can lead you astray. Be on guard for that which is not true and holy unto God, and stand up for what is right and wrong. The Lord gives each Christian the power of discernment; be in prayer with the Lord, study His word, and live it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for overcoming the world. Thank you for living in us, guiding and directing our path. I want to pray for myself as well as all other believers that we may solely listen to you. I want to pray that we not allow for ourselves to be tricked into believing something that may not be evil, but is only “half” right. That each one of us utilize the discernment that you have equipped us with. In your name I pray, Amen.

Psalm 147:11, “the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

Insight & Encouragement

The Lord delights in you!! Think about that for a minute. The Lord doesn’t just put up with you or deal with you when he has too, He is delighted for you to be apart of His family. When Christians fear the Lord, it is not a human fear. It is a fear that is acknowledging that God is greater than they are. God is perfect in every way, and we are far from perfect. As a Christian, we live our lives for God; we serve Him, worship Him, share His word, and our hope is in Him. We have a different hope as we live on this earth, compared to that hope of the world. While the world hopes for worldly possessions, we have a hope that is in God and one day being with Him in eternity. The hope of the world will pass away, but the hope in God is eternal and will last forever. No matter how much money you have, how big of house you have, the fanciest cars, clothes, or whatever other materialist items you have will never be enough for you. God’s unfailing love is more than enough to satisfy you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me and being delighted to have me as a part of your family. Thank you for your love. As I walk this earth, I pray that I will not have the desires of the world. My hope is in you, and not that of the world. I want to pray for those who do not have this hope, but rather the hope of the world. May they come to know and love you, finding that when their hope is in you it is secure and safe. In your name I pray, Amen.

Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

Insight & Encouragement

Paul dedicated his life to sharing the word of God. As he traveled around sharing the gospel of Christ with people, he was bold and confident, because he knew what he was sharing was the truth. Not being ashamed of the gospel is how we as Christians need to live our lives. We must share the Word with people, and never have a fear of rejection. There will be many times where we get rejected, turned away, and even persecuted, but we never become ashamed of what we know is the truth. Stand firm in your faith no matter how hard the world attempts to knock you down. Allow your actions to represent the word you are sharing with others. In other words, don’t say one thing and live the opposite. Sharing the gospel isn’t just done through words, but also through our actions.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gospel. Thank you for the opportunities to share with others your word, and for men like Paul who dedicate their lives to sharing your word. I pray that in my life and the lives of all Christians, we will never be ashamed of your word, but that we are bold in our faith. I pray that you help us to stand firm and to remain grounded in your truth, even as the world rejects and attempts to hurt us. In your name I pray, Amen.
